China makes abortive push for global web censorship declaration

The hosting of a “World Internet Conference” tech industry talking shop in censorship-happy China was always going to raise eyebrows, but this is classic: According to reports by TechCrunch, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, the organizers slipped a draft declaration under delegates’ hotel room doors around 11pm on Thursday evening, with the intention of a public launch on Friday morning. It urged respect for national sovereignty, joint efforts on cybersecurity and so on, but also a global crackdown on online porn and the destruction of “all dissemination channels of information of violent terrorism.” It also called for “more digital cultural products of high quality” in order to “widely spread the positive energy.” The declaration failed to appear at the closing ceremony, after all.
